price to pay for #7 jointer

Brad Risley

>I would like to pick up a #7 but I am unsure as to the price range to expect to pay. I am looking for a good condition user plane. My father lives in a different part of the country and I would like him to be on the look out for me but I have no idea of prices.

>on e-bay they go for $35-$75 for a Bailey plus shipping at garage sales prices are every where. at anttek shops they are $75-$150. You can do a search on ebay to of completed auctions to get an idea. I had one that didn't make the $55 reserve last week so it sits under the couch and I listen to my wife complane about tools in every room of the house.

>A bargain at less than $25. $30-45 about right. I wouldn't feel cheated if I had to pay up to maybe $50 with shipping for a quite decent one. That internet auction thing will probably get you one for slightly more if your budget is not too tight - it may be the best way to get one quick. Bargains can be found, but never when you want to pick up a specific item.

>In the listing of items for auction (not within an individual item's auction page) along the left side is a checkbox for Completed Items. Check it and hit Enter.

It's very helpful to see prices of similar items sold. Also interesting to see them change over time.

Don't be picky

>One of my most frequently used planes is a corrugated sole CRAFTSMAN #7. It adjusts to take long, wispy shavings and works better than any plane should. I think it cost me less than $30 on ebay. I just picked up a corrugated #6 for about $15. The older Craftsmans are great users. Keep them under the bench where they are handy and put your Stanleys on display for your friends to admire.

Re: not just Stanley

>If you're budget sensitive, the older non-Stanley brands go for a little less money, and are NOT inferior, if made at a similar period. Competition was fierce, and quality was a factor.

Union, Sargent, Millers Falls, Record all made damn fine tools.

here 's a cross reference of model numbers

Sometimes Sears and Wards too

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>My best bench plane is a "Wards Master" No. 4 smoother. Learn to tell what makes for a likely-to-be decent plane and buy on that basis, not the name.
