>dod all bedrock planes have the #6 in front of the plane # at my usual wed night auction they have a #5 with a bedrock lever cap but it is round sided and dosent have the frog adjusting screws of a bedrock. I am thinking it is a frankin plane with a levercap worth more than the plane. Quick help please as I leave in about 30 minutes

>Hey Ernie - see Bob Kaune's type study. Older types were sometimes numbered in the single digits and not the 600 series. And they had round tops like a Bailey.

Good luck, David

>No - but they did have the size # same as the Bailey for a while. It was a cast from a different mold than a Bailely, so there is no mix up. I have often seen wrong lever caps on Baileys though.

>The very first Bed Rocks that were made from 1898- 99 were marked with just the standard number. I have a No.4 bedrock like this. One feature of these planes is that it has the Sept 3 1895 patent milled out behind the other patent on the body.On my and apparently others this was milled out AFTER the plane was japaned. These early Bed rocks even though not number with the 60* still have the same features,[Frog adjustment and bedding] that are found on other rounded side bedrocks....Todd
