UK tools shops?

Rich McNabb

>I'll be in the UK on vacation for a few weeks. I was thinking about buying a tool as reminder. Are there any specific tool shops that anyone would recommed? From one of Graham Blackburn's books I've got: Arnold and Walker (Suffolk), Bristol Design (Bristol), The Tool Shop (Suffolk), and Old Tool Store (Lincolnshire). I'm open to any other ideas. I'm not looking for something very expensive. More like a good quality tool at a decent price. Could be a plane, chisel or saw.

>I'm in England quite a lot and have checked out most of the dealer's shops. I'd say there are none that stand out as a venue for bargain tools, but Toolbazaar, The Old Tool Store and Bristol Design are fair priced. BD has a pretty miserable selection of planes though, with very little in the way of quality infills and the owner is arrogant, rude and unhelpful. The remainder, Tony Murland, Trindersfinetools, etc, suffer from the nutty price sickness of price extortion and are not to be recommended unless they are the only dealer to have that particular tool.

>Rich,

All the ones I'm aware of in the link below. Pennyfarthing Tools are pretty good; fair prices and some good stuff. You might also try Mike Hancock at Classic Hand Tools as he has some old ones too.

>Rich, If you get up to Edinburgh, take the time to drive over to Inchmartine House, Andy Stephens' Tool Bazaar, near Perth. IIRC, it's about an hour and a half drive from Edinburgh. You'll find Andy to be a very friendly, helpfull and enormously knowledgeable guy. He appears to genuinely enjoy answering questions and talking about old tools. I was there June a year ago and picked up a James Howorth 8" dovetail saw which Tom Law sharpened for me. It's now my favorite. There were several other items I now regret not buying. When I was there, Andy's stock was pretty extensive, but it fluctuates, depending on the volume of his internet sales. His prices aren't cheap, but they are fair. Unfortunately, the exchange rate jacks the price of things British (and Scottish) throught he roof. I've attached the link to Andy's web site. Have fun.

>Alf,

Yes, I went there last Fall (when still a toolshop) but found early this year that it is a now a wedding planner outfit. One more for your list is Leeside Toolshop: http://www.leesidetools.co.uk/secondhand_tools.htm

Here, I picked up 8x2 washita, Arkansas and Charnley Forest stones - all virtually unused - for the equivalent of $45. Most dealers will want more than this for just one stone.

>Art,

Well it's a small world. I went to the Southwest Forest Wood Fair today, and who did I buy a Record #044 from? Chris White! Apparently he's moved down here but is still selling the tools. His website needs updating, but the email address is still good. Heck of a coincidence. Thanks for the Leeside tools tip off; hadn't come across them at all.

Enough?!

>Please define "enough". Does not compute ;~)

Ah, you're just saying that 'cos it means you can't torment me with links to #044s on the 'bay any more...
