Plane questions

Ernie Miller Topeka

>I am back at work today and find two hand planes sitting on my desy Boss tells me $3 each. so right off I have been taken for a ride. any way the best one is a 9 1/2 is there a page that dates planes by the way the plane iron was stamped? this one is an earlier model I think as it says STANLEY RULE & LEVEL Co with STANLEY RULE in an arch over the & LEVEL CO The blade on this one is so used up that at some point the owner P.C.H. drilled a hole in the iron to extend the use of it. It's sharpened to with in 1/4" of the slot The other is a made in USA 220 that is Ford blue any ideas on the maker? no other markings except G2 & 2U in the frog area. I'm thinking cat fodder but then I will have to worry about hitting it with the mower. SOme time going to work is fun! But that is over with and I am ready to go home.

>Don't know of a web page, but Walter's bible shows the semicircle "STANLEY RULE" over the straight "& LEVEL Co." (TM-J)in use from about 1886-1909.

>Walter, in Antique and Collectable Stanley Tools, publishes a study of the the #9 1/2 block planes, which details the cutter stamps. The one you describe was used from about 1888 until about 1908 or 1909, when it was replaced with "STANLEY" in a flatter arc over "RULE AND LEVEL CO."

Interestingly, his Bailey plane type study shows the trademark you describe being used on bench planes from 1872 until 1884.

>Walter has been promising his new version of the book would be out in " a few more months" for about 2 years now. The promise was reiterated again for the latest time just a couple of weeks ago. Just remember, blue just isn't the proper skin color for a guy like you.

>...and you've got a lot of skin to burn, Ernie, although I'm sure no one will argue with you that a sunburn is more a quality issue than a quantity issue.

I got a nice one a couple of weeks ago, while out on the Delaware Bay, even though I kept my clothes on. The term "redneck", not to mention "red faced," is an apt appellation, in this case. I'm afraid I set a real bad example for my sycamore trees, which are now peeling bark by the bushel.

>I see the one that has a date of use as 1876 has a pat. date on it of Mar 20 1877 so it can't be a 1876 blade could it?
