WAY OT: What to do in Portland, ME

chad pearson

>My wife and I are contemplating a trip to Portland Maine this weekend (I live in Minnesota). I would like to visit LN Toolworks on Friday but after that I am at a loss for what to do. I know we have a few people from ME on this board and I thought I would search for suggestions on things to do in the area (attractions, restaurant suggestions, lodging????).

Thanks,

Chad

>If you like art museums, these are both quite good:

Farnsworth Art Museum

Portland Museum of Art

When you visit L-N you might drive up the road a bit to Rockland (where the Farnsworth is) and try the Brass Compass Cafe. It's just a small restaurant but I thought the food was fabulous.

>This weekend(Sat and Sun) is the North Atlantic Blues Festival at harbor park in Rockland. If blues doesn't appeal to you it's a beautiful port to visit and besides music there'll be lots of activities for the family.

>If you go to LN tools then you may as well go eight miles up the road to the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship and look at the school it is a really nice place. And then go into Rockport and Camden as both as very nice little habors with beautiful old boats and great food.

Also there is the Shelter institute which is somewhere around Woolwich and Damariscotta. They do timber framing classes and have tools for sale as well as a really good selection of books on woodworking, building, etc. Its an interesting place. It just a neat little timber frame building along the road. I think the sign at the road says Wood Butcher Tools.

Just up the road from the Shelter institute a mile or two is a great flea market. I think it goes from Wed to Sunday but I'm not sure.

And there are lots of antique shops everywhere! Plenty of places to find old tools. And if nothing else it is just scenic and a nice drive up Hwy 1.

First thing you do is...

Bob Hackett

>On your way up 295 to get to coastal RT 1 you stop off at the BIG globe in Yarmouth. This will be the DeLorme map co.Pick up a Maine atlas from them.Believe me,it`ll be the best $20 you ever spent. These maps have every dirt road in Maine on them and you really have to work to get lost with one of these in the car.

The second thing you do is call me when you get to Portland(or call before).I can tell you where to go from there, starting with the Montsweag flea market in Woolwich. It`s right on RT1 on the left about 500 yards down from Woodbutcher Tools which is on the right. It`s open Sat+Sun(Wed morning is for dealers)till 3:00 PM.You have to pass it on the way to LN in Warren.

E-mail me for my phone # and we can take it from there.
