Woodworker karma and mis-assebled 42X

Mick Foley

>Hey all -

A few weeks back I posted about a replacement screw for a 42X. Lief Hanson noted that he had a 42X with the screw, but missing the anvil. After a short email exchange, he mailed me the entire 42X - refusing any offer of payment. His only condition was that I do something similar for someone in the future (and I will). Thank you Lief - may good woodworking karma flow your way...

The 2nd half of the story occured last night when I cleaned and assembled the 42X. It turns out that the one I bought (not Lief's) was assemebled so that the striker was upside down. I can't see how anyone would think that one could set a saw with it that way, but you never know... It certainly did not come from the factory that way, so somewhere along the line someone took it apart, probably to clean and oil it, and when reassembling, got it wrong.

>There's a longstanding rule among auto mechanics (at least the shade tree variety) that, if there's no parts left on the bench when you're finished, you've assembled it right. Clearly, the prior owner was applying this principle. Maybe that's why it went into the marketplace - "Dang, I'll never learn how to set saws! What's the matter with this thing anyhow!? After all that time I spent cleaning it up and all!!"

>I met the previos owner - upon winning the aution on eBay I realized that he lived 12 or blocks away from me here in Berkeley. Rather than pay shipping/deal with PayPal, we arranged to meet and exchanged cash and the items.

Nice guy and he seemed to know a fair amount about woodworking - my guess is that he never used the saw set and that the owner before that messed it up.

Strange things...
