Blades for a 46...

Mick Foley

>Hey all,

I've got a Stanley 46 coming in the mail, but of course it only has a few (3) blades. I'd like to get more. I know of two options: Jim Reed sells a set and St. James Bay Tool sells a set.

Has anyone used either? Has anyone compared both? Are there other options I should consider?

Thanks!

Mick

I've got the St. James Bay set. I had to fine tune the angle slightly while sharpening, but they are really nice.

One heads-up to watch for, though. A long time ago I saw one of their tongue cutters that was machined from stock that was too thin to be clamped in the plane - probably an isolated instance. If you buy theirs (and I would if I had to do it over again) just check that all the blades clamp properly.

Enjoy it - I sure do!

>I bought several blades for my 46 from Jim Reed and I wouldn't hesitate to do business with Jim again. The blades are great and make the plane a real joy to use. The angles are tricky, and must be just right or it can lead to all sorts of frustration. I was even inspired to make a wooden box to keep the plane and all it's sundry parts together. Neal

I haven't heard about Jim Reed before now. Does he make other replacement blades as well as for the #46? Does he have a website?

Thanks,

Terry

Yes

>He sells a lot of different replacement blades including bench, scrub, rabbet, combo, etc. He sells some very useful blades that were never offered by Stanley, and he even has a few replacement parts for combo planes like slitter foot depth stops for 45, 46 and 55. He will also make custom blades if you need something unusual. email him by clicking on his name on one of his responses in this thread. I only have experience with 46 blades, but I'm sure the others are just as good. Neal

The tiniest difference in bed angle (both planes) and mouth opening alters the required angle on the blade. I suspect that the tolerances on the #46 itself would not be tight enough to allow identical blades to work, even if they were made.

In practice, I check and correct the skew angle of any skewed blade every time I sharpen, putting a little extra pressure on one side if required to make tiny changes as time passes on.
