shipping furniture

Matt -- Los Angeles

>hey all,

I'm just about to finish a commission table for a restaurant in Kentucky and I'm in California. How do you go about shipping your furniture if anyone is doing it.

What precautions should I take to protect the finish? Wax paper under foam and bubble wrap?

I've never done this before and I'm a little nervous about it. Any help would be very helpful. The table is approx. 2ft X 4ft and 18" high....

Thanks

Matt - Los Angeles

>Matt ... I use national moving companies for furniture delivery (Bekins, United, etc).

I blanket wrap the piece (Rockler has furniture pads for $11.69 each) most movers will have pads on board and will wrap the piece when they pick it up.

You can have the piece picked up, or take it to a forwarding location (saves a few days) and they will either take it to another forwarding center close to your customer or deliver it directly to their location. Forwarding center to forwarding center is a little faster and a bit less expensive.

I've sent several pieces to Boston on the cost average $150 per trip - Parson's table, dining table and chairs. Delivery took about three weeks.

Good luck . . . rj

>Most of the folks who ship up here use the furniture pad and cling wrap approach to protection. One of the other fellows in the gallery claims crating creates the "OK to throw" mindset.Seems when shippers can see that`s it`s furniture that`s wrapped they tend to take more care with handling.

Don`t forget the insurance!
