A bit pre-mature, but I

Frank Mutchler in Colorado Springs

>just can't help it! My new shop is on the way. The ground has been broken and the footings/floor will be poured next week. It's 24' x 30'. I'll probably take until fall/winter to get it closed in and through the winter to finish the inside...

I found a shop design program referenced in the archives and I've been playing with it. Never thought I'd have the luxury of an entire building devoted to my hob...er work. :>)!!

>No, I didn't because I didn't know about it then! A concrete company was doing some work for a neighbor on Wednesday. The neighbor knew I was wanting to widen my driveway & so he sent them down to see me. Since they could do two jobs at the same time while they were in the area he quoted me a price which was quite a bit cheaper than a bid I had gotten earlier, about 1/4 the other bids.

While doing the work they saw my current shop setup and the project I'm working on & the foreman ordered a large pantry for his wife.;.) I mentioned I was hoping to build a detached shop but the prices I had been quoted for the foundation/floor were too high (in my opinion). Bottom line, he tossed a price out that was 1/3 of any bids I had & I took him up on it. The pour will include a 10' section of driveway from the new shop to the sidewalk & road.

>Great. But how did you get permits so fast, or did you already have them?

>Prematurity is not the issue here. Overly exuberent optimism with respect to anticipated completion dates of major milestones is what we are dealing with. You're going to get really tired of finishing off the interior, and even completing some of the essential utility connections the first time you make some whispy shavings, or when presented with yet another exuberently optimistic Honeydew List. DAMHIKT!

In the dead of winter next, you may begin to appreciate the words of John Paul Jones, and maybe those of Murphy, as well.

>I'm afraid Murphy & I have more than a passing acquaintance....I expect his uninvited presence will manifest itself throughout this journey as it has in others I've completed.

You're soooo right pointing out that the initial thrill of the chase melts down into a kind of cold and murky drudgery as the captured prize takes on unimaginable weight....ever shot a Royal Bull Elk way up in the hight country and then almost killed yourself getting the carcass back to civilization? ;>) Ahhh, but remember the taste of that succulent tenderloin?

Yep, you're right.....it's the thrill of the journey; neither simply the Beginning nor the anticipated End but rather the meat in the middle! Unfortunately, this project will have ample meat in the middle. Couldn't talk you into a couple weeks vacation in Colorado could I, huh? Anybody, huh?? Where'd everybody go :>)!!

>Congrats! I think I have a little bit of the completion procrastination problem... my shop still needs a ceiling and floor tiling. After 8 years. I got to the point where it was "good enough", and there always seems like there is something more important (or fun!) to do.

Be sure to post some photo updates.

>Take heart, Frank! At least you are starting with a clean slate, and your site is probably big enough for a comfortable, efficient shop. There's nothing as dampening to the spirit as taking over an 80 year old building, still filled with moldering family history and a bunch of great reusable junk. Just don't ever give anyone permission to ever put anything away in it.

Most helpful advice.
