Sargent Plane Question

David Miller from Iowa

>Just picked up a nice 718C with the tilting front knob. However, the knob is aluminum not rosewood.

Hadn't seen this before so I thought I'd ask the experts. Original factory equipment? Sargent made after market add on?

>According to Dave Heckel's Sargent Planes Identification and Value book (1997), the knob and handle were both mahogany. The book has a drawing of the tilting front knob and a description, but it doesn't mention being aluminum. The 718c is one of Sargent's "Auto-Set" planes. Pretty cool!! This series was made between 1916 and 1947. I think Mr. Heckel has a newly revised Sargent book available.

>I have never heard of an Aluminum sargent knob but they did make an after market cast iron knob which is rare and fairly vaulable....at least according to the Sargent book. I have a couple of these Sargents with the tilting front knob, pretty neat but alot that you see have damage to the cast iron base the knob sets on and I think the Stanley tilting knob system was the better design of the two....Todd

>If Todd hasn't heard of it that means it's a very rare factory model or a homemade job. It's definitely aluminum, not iron. Here's the link -what does everybody think?

>Don't have the new Sargent book handy but I seem to remember Dave Heckel talking about the an after market Sargent metal knob that was adujstable front, back and side to side..if that rounded protrubence has a cross patterned slot, I think you have something very few people have seen. there's a picture in the new book..I'll check when I get home...but I think that's what it is...IMHO..the knob was worth the price of the whole plane...by the way; that's a great gloat...let's all have a rousing reply.....YOU SUCK!! :-)

>All The 718 and 722 had a tilting wood handle that fitted into a base that has a cross type slot in it.These are pretty common but prone to being broke...The after market metal knob which was designed for regular Sargent planes was the no. 60 and was made out of Cast iron and marked Sargent. It was designed according to Heckel to add weight to the plane. Was only made from 1922-25 and he places a vaule on it of $500-$1000 just for the IRON knob.....I would have to see one sell to believe that but no doubt it is a rare piece.I don't think it is what is on this plane though....Todd
