>I just took delivery of this unit yesterday afternoon. I was not able to use the unit because the Tool Guide Bar was missing. Oh well, I had to at least turn it on and when I did the platter looked like it was wobbling (sp)...so I decided to check a few tolerances.

I set up a dial indicator to see how much run out the platter has and was really surprised to find a total of .002" in the center of the platter and only .004" at the outside edge. The perceived wobble was the result of the platter not being perfectly concentric with the aluminum mounting plate and has no influence on the sharpening process itself.

I thought I'd have every plane iron, chisel, kitchen knife, etc. in the whole neighborhood sharpened by now but such is life. One thing is for sure, the folks up in Canada are certainly paying attention to detail here.

>Please post your opinion of the system after you've had a chance to sharpen every blade within a 100 yards or so. I saw a demo of it at the last WW show in my area. It looked okay - but was not ready to take a jump at it. Still like using sand paper on float glass and my Veritas sharpening jig for now.

>Hi Bart...yeah, my post wasn't intended to comment on the sharpening ability of the unit; many others have more than adequately covered that aspect. My comment was in response to my surprise at the tolerances Veritas holds while mass producing these.

As soon as the Guide Bar arrives I'll be testing the units ability to set, maintain, and repeat a given setting. IMHO, a platter that rotates true and an accurate, repeatable jig are very important qualities of a great sharpening system.

Like you, I've used Scary Sharp for a long time and just got tired of the mess and the time it takes, etc. I'd rather spend my time cutting wood than steel ;>)
