TC's Bench

jim_reed@marietta

>Sometimes I have to stop production and rush a paying project thru the shop. That was the case yesterday when I was called upon to build a feeding bench for TC (The Cat). He has been eating on top of a pair of cardboard boxes for a few years and has earned something more substantial. I used some construction lumber for the base and an orphan 5/4 walnut board for the top. Wood was rough, but LN scrub and trusty #7 took it down well. Picture does not do justice to the (unfinished)walnut top. It will be stunning! Hope TC likes it.

>That's probably one of the finkiest clients that you will ever have... even if you are replacing a cardboard box!

Just hope it doesn't double as a scratching post!!!!

BTW, What is the bench sitting on top of????

The top

jim_reed@marietta

>U R correct. In the first picture it is sitting on top of the Ky cupboard. I am working on the doors, but had to stop for TC's bench. Here is a better picture of the oiled walnut top.

>TC? ;~)

Nice little feeding table. Walnut top, creme de la creme for good ol' TC eh? reminds me of the lyrics from my favorite Dave and Sugar song Golden Tears. "From a Chevy to a Lincoln, from paper shades to curtains, from neon lights to crystal chandilers". In TC's case it's "From cardboard to Walnut".

>Why does TC want/need a low bench to sit upon while eating? My last cat used to eat up on a 30-inch high table so the dogs would not gobble up her food, but the TC bench looks to low for that.

TC's housemate

jim_reed@marietta

>TC's housemate is a vertically challenged mixed weiner dog. All it takes is a 13" bench and bowl stand to keep him out of the goodies.

Just curious :)

Not to be rude, but WHY construction lumber?

I just don't get the combo...

Wood choice

jim_reed@marietta

>The client specified construction lumber and the project was priced accordingly. I added the walnut top because: 1)It looks so cool, 2)I am clearing out clutter & board was an orphan, and 3)I like the client and thought I would add a bonus.

Actually I have made many of these benches and like the construction wood bottom. 8/4 construction lumber is inexpensive, lighweight, strong, and easy to work. The thick legs look good. When you stain the base and then add a figured hardwood top everything matches well. Here is a photo of one with a figured maple top.

>I think walnut is a totally inappropriate wood for this project. Why any right thinking WWer with the customer`s best interests in mind would have used(here it comes folks)catalpa.

I know,I know,I`m ashamed of myself but you guys just make it soooo easy sometimes.

A MilkBone tastes a lot like a Rye Crisp, but just a little grittier.

Only one of these is a taxable item, IMHO, and this guy has no problem telling the difference.
