>If you search using the keywords FLATTENING and WATERSTONES, you should get lots of hits.

Here is a thread about using drywall sanding screen.

If you have some large diamond plates, they work well, too.

>180 or 220 wet/dry paper on a granite or glass plate, just mist with a little water. The key is to flatten often (every few minutes or so).

>I have the Norton set, so YMMV for shaptons, since they're harder. This is a varient of rob Cosman's planing and sharpening video method.

I flatten them on each other using the backs. I flatten both sides of the 220 on a Duosharp, then the back of each coarser grit flattens the front (the sharpening side) of the next higher grit. The 220 back to the 1000 front, the 1000 back to the 4000 front, etc. Periodically re-reference the back of each of the grits to the duosharp.

Theoretically, you need three mutual references to define a flat plane, but I find two surfaces works well for a long time.

>What I did yesterday ... Just grabbed a smallish piece of 3/4 inch MDF bigger than a piece of sandpaper. Wet the surface slightly and lay down a piece of 220 or 320 grit paper and rub the stone gently on the paper. You will know when it is flat or nearly so by the way the water tension forms a vacuum on the stone. Check with good strait edge. Repeat if necessary. Easy peezee ;>) When done, discard the MDF and the sandpaper.

>Good question! I am away from home on business but I suppose any of the coarser grits would work.
