Disston Saw ID

David Miller from Iowa

>OK Disstonites, heres a scan of the handle of a saw I picked years ago. It looks like a D-24 copper-handled pruning saw, but its not a skewback, rather a straight back 8-point crosscut, 26, with a very nice nib. And it has a rosewood handle, not beech. I had (some months back) a debate with a well known saw aficionado (who many of you may know) who informed me that this saw didnt exist, that there were no D-24s made with a straight back and that if the handle is rosewood, it was a user replacement. I cant see the etch and Im not about to get the sandpaper out.

Questions:

Has anyone seen a D-24 with a straight back?

Has anyone seen a D-24 with a rosewood handle?

Has anyone seen a D-24 longer than 24?

Does anyone have a catalogue that shows this handle on a carpenters saw?

Thanks, David

Not a Disston

>I think this saw was made by Vulcan Saw works which was a company under Harvey Peace of New York. Disston bought out Peace in 1890 and kept using this style handle for a prunning saw.The older Vulcan saws wre wood working saws I think. I have had a couple of these older Vulcan pre Disston saws like the one in your photo, one is shown in the book the fine art of Tools by the way.I actually think these older Vulcans are more common then the Disston D24's as I don't think I have ever see one of those. Not saying yours doesn't have rosewood handles but all i have seen had fruitwood handles if I remember right but I could be wrong....Neat saw , eh?...Todd
