>Anyone have any experience with or thoughts about the quality of the planes made by Crown Plane Co.? Never heard of them until this morning. They sure do look pretty and the prices are reasonable...

>I've been to their site several times but have never bit. Can I add two questions of my wn? OK thanks

Firstly - Is figured maple a good stable material for building a wooden plane?

And the jack scrub - There's no description on this. Is it simply a single cambered iron with a slightly wider mouth? It also says that it comes with two blades...whazzat? Flat and cambered?

>Leon's curly maple planes used the figured stuff for the outer laminations only, and after 10 years or so, the Crown panel raiser I have is still remarkably true. Pretty, too.

Leon Robbins sold the company

Bob Hackett

>The new owners moved it to Portland and still make good planes.Leon still makes planes too, only on a limited basis.

Figured maple is an excellent plane making wood.Cecil Pierce used to make his one piece planes from both hard and soft figured maple and never had any problem with any of them.He was always careful to make sure the wood was good and dry before he worked it though.

>I just received the panel raiser a week or two ago from ebay, and it's a treat. To this point, I've only tried it on clear pine, but it works beautifully. I haven't even fettled it and it works very nicely.

But I'm thinking I might want to do some honing before I try to make it work in hardwood.

But overall, fit and finish are great.

>Is this a new Jim White plane, or is it an old Robbins plane?

I asked here, a week ago, whether anyone had used one of the new Jim White Crown planes, and got no responses.

>I have a couple of the newer planes and they work quite well. I think this fellow worked with Leon and more or less took it over when Leon decided to retire. Jim came to the Windsor class I was in and brought a lot of new planes. Of course I bit and now have two planes of his. He also hung around for a couple hours and helped anyone who had questions and made sure everyone was using them correctly. Seemed like a pretty good guy and knowledgable.

>Oh, good. I have the current brochure, but had not been able to find any objective commentary about the newer planes.

Thanks.
