Copper Plated Square

>Hi all,

Just wondering how many of you have ever seen a copper plated framing square? I picked one up at an auction for $11 along with a disston saw (bent blade to be used for scrapers). This is the first time I have ever saw a framing square plated in copper and my father never recalls seeing one. There was a older gentlman at the auction that said he had one a number of years ago.

Regards, Ryan

>Ryan,

Yes, I've seen several of them in my years of collecitng old tools - both regular framing squares and the knock-down type. Can't recall who made them, but think maybe Keen Kutter sold and marked one made by sombody else. Never had one of those, but did have a smaller style "improved' framing square that was copper plated. There was also some other type tool I can'at now recall that wasaaaaaa seen with both copper and chrome plating - the copper ones supposedly just a first coat put on under chrome that had worn off.

>While I don't see one everyday I have to say I see enough of them even in the old tool hell I live in to say they are some what common at least in very good or less condition. While i figure others made them too most that i see are Stanleys in particular the 100 series. These when new sold for a bit more then other finishes.looking in an old Stanley catalog from the 1930's a no. 100 square with the "Royal Copper" finish sold for $3.60 compared to a polished one at $2.70 or nickled at $3.15.....Stainless steel squares cost almost a buck more then the copper ones and in my experance rather more scarce...This was when a Stanley no.1 plane sold for $2.95 by the way....Todd
