Help Setting a Record Vise

Bart Goldberg

>I'm in the final stages of building my bench and I need to determine where to set up my Record Vise (its the biggest one they made). One of the consideration is the size of the front face. As I plan to have the side edge of the face be flush with the edge of the table, I need to decide how big to make the front face. Is there any rule of thumb here? Can I attach a piece of wood that is substantially larger than the cast face?

Thanks

Bart

>You sure can but keep in mind when you go to clamp small stuff the vise will twist. With this thought in mind I hedged my vise closer to the end of the table so the wood overhangs the vise by 2" on the left and 4" on the right.

>Yes, you can put a wooden face on the vice that extends beyond the metal. The wooden jaw on my Record 52 1/2 vice extends about three inches wider than the metal on each side. It is positioned so the left end of the wooden jaw is about an inch away from the front left corner of the bench.

HOWEVER, you will experience racking if you clamp anything off-center in the vice, and the wider the wooden jaw then the worse the racking will be.

Understand and work within the limitations of the vice and you shouldn't have any poblems with it.
