Learning to use Hand Tools...

Samuel A. Jones

>Greetings,

I would like to learn how to use and care for hand tools properly. I have quite a few tools and can use some of them alright. But everything I know has been self taught. And its a little frustrating some times. Like I am having a hard time learning how to use a wooden dado plane. I am sure half of my problem is tuning it properly, and I cant find any information on that. There are lots of other tools that I know I am not using properly or like they could be used. So to remedy this I was wondering if any of you guys know of a basic hand tool woodworking class that I could take thats being offered this year, preferably as close to NC as possible. I live near Charlotte and Hickory NC. Or do any of you guys live in my area that I could hang around with and learn from ? Thanks for your help and suggestions.

Warmest Regards

Samuel A. Jones

The best (although still not perfect, or complete) "one stop shop" is Restoring, Tuning & Using Classic Woodworking Tools by Michael Dunbar.

Dado planes

>Dado planes are for cross grain cuts and the best of them have skew blades. Make sure your blade is ground to the appropriate angle and is very sharp. Set it to take a cut thinner than a sheet of typing paper. The shaving should be a spiral curl which looks like a seashell. For my dados, I like to define the sides with a saw, remove the waste with a chisel and then use the plane to smoothe out the cut. How do your do yours?
