Ebonizing cherry - need to neutralize?

Scott in Douglassville, PA

>Hey, all -

Figured I'd post this on this side, too: I'm ebonizing a little bit of cherry with vinegar/steel wool, and am wondering if I need to add a neutralization step. The test strips I'm doing are staining nicely, but have a decided vinegar smell. I'm wondering if that'll affect topcoats (probably danish oil, maybe shellac - dunno yet). Any ideas?

Thanks,

Scott, where's that fridge repair guy?!

nope.

>Well, doubtful, at least, based on what I have seen from white oak. I've never had a problem finishing with shellac, oil, phenolic resin varnish (Waterlox and Rock Hard), or water-based finishes (Olympus and Minwax). Vinegar is pretty mild to begin with, after a few days with rusted steel wool, it would be even milder.

Sooo.... whacha makin?
