Farm Table is finished

Bill Leffingwell,Hot springs Va

>A couple months ago I saw an 18th century French farm table and my wife said "I need that for the kitchen".The $1800 price tag ended that, but I said I'll build one for you!So I down sized the table to suit the application and went to the wood room and dug out some old walnut, cherry and chestnut.Almost all of the work was done with hand tools, since time of construction was not a factor I really enjoyed the job.At this point I was unsure of the finish to use and posted the question and chose the Sutherland Wells low lustre polymerized tung oil which was recommended. The old look that was water resistant was perfect.I spent a lot of time distressing the table(no beating it with chain, keys etc)a few hours softening the edges gouging here and there and putting a few knife cuts on the top and it really did look old and worn.A project that has led to another one.a wall hung old looking cabinet for the kitchen.I want to thank everyone who responded to my previous post.

Nice!

>Very pretty and very practical. I like the mixture of woods. My grandmother would have applauded your decision - she wouldn't have dreamed of working in her kitchen without a table in the middle of the room (now in our kitchen, though it's a breakfast table instead of a working table).

>Nice work - and nice baking work by the wife, too!

Dumb question from a rustic furniture ignoramus: What makes it a farm table?

Very nice

>Simple yet elegant design. Nice choice of contrasting wood too. She should be proud.

You do realize you can take that $1,800.00-wood cost and your time and use the rest to buy some new tools or wood!

Re: What isFarm Table ??

>Beats me.The shop owner said it was a French Farm table.(not a city table)The $1800 original was fairly well constructed with pegged tenons, plane marks still visible and really in good shape considering the age and wear and tear it has endured. The top was cracked so I did attach my top to allow for wood movement.I guess that many tables of that era actually did see duty in farm houses.
