Desk progress

>Work is proceeding well on my secretary desk. I finished constructing the drawers and have them mostly fitted. Fitting is a challenge on this project because the side runners are the case itself (not that easy to trim). The two inside drawers are bookmatched maple burl and were just oiled. On the punch list is trim and fitting of the fall. I plan to attach the hinges first and trim to fit. Also plan to use my #46 to do the cross grain rabbet on each end. I used the r*uter for rabbets on the inside of the doors and got too much chip out.

>Here is the open shot. The secretary back is 1x4 construction lumber split to 1/2" on bandsaw and then T&G on edge with a #49 plane. I think it looks better than plywood.

>Jim,

It's looking great. I think I would have hidden the Leigh jig for the photo shoot though!

What is the wood for the fall?

>Sorry about the jig--I run a hybrid shop. Electrons for hogging and push power for finish. As for wood, this desk began as a 17" x 12 ft cherry board. I went nuts at the woodstore and bought it just bacause it was so pretty. Two pieces were used on the sides with a small glue up to bring them up to about 28". The remaining piece was used for the fall. It features a big knot right in the middle. Should look pretty cool when finished.

>My wife would never let me stack wood on the stove like that! but if it is in the shop I can see hoe it would be nice for baking japan and cleaning cast iron skillets.

Looks good, though.

Offcuts

jim_reed@marietta

>My workshop is the downstairs (1600 sq ft mother in law apt). Tools are in the dining room and kitchen. I throw offcuts on top of the stove until current project is finished. Then little ones go in trash and big ones go in box.
