Re: Drive head?

>There is a squair hole in the top of the drive head where the berrings are put in I think? is there suposed to be a felt block put in that hole and then oil added? what type of oil should I be using. The berrings seem good definatly won't be adding dog power or electricity to this one. Thanks Todd-O-

Bearing Oil

Todd O. Cronkhite Native of Maine

>Neat little lathe you've got there Ernie. Looks like it would make a good traveling compainion too.Small, light weight, and cordless. Could stand there and make a turning whilest viewing the Grand Canyon or something.

I'd that that you are right about putting a felt type, or similiar fabric down that hole. For oil I have been using that oil called Zoom Spout that is used alot in the HVAC trade on some bronze bearings and been putting in some small, old electron killers as well and have had no bad luck with it as of yet. It is made for high RPM applications, and a little bit last a long time. I get mine at the local Ace Hardware. Cost about $1.30 a bottle. Let us see the completed treadle when you finish it alright. Walker Turner made some good stuff, so this should out last you easily enough. Just don't let Bob near it unless it is bolted down. ;~)

>Yes, and there was probably originally a metal plate that fastened down on top of the hole to keep dust and spiders out - is that a hole I see to the left in the picture for a screw to hold the plate down?

I picked up a Delta Homecraft table saw that uses a similar arrangement for oiling the bearings - it actually had a woven piece of cloth with bound edges (no loose threads) around the shaft. My carpenter son uses it now for a jobsite saw, and loves it.

Lesson: you want the cloth/felt/whatever saturated, but you DON'T want to fill the cavity with oil, past the saturation point. Doing that will result in oil coming out the bearings and getting slung all over everything. DAMHIKT.

>Ernie, congratulations on your new lathe, I have the exact same model in my shop, and its served me well. Mine is set up for electric, but i'd love to convert it to treadle, never been sure if that will work or not. If you can post a shot of the oak scraps I'd greatly appreciate it.

As for oiling, the previous owner must have filled the headstock as oil was all over everything when I got it, Now I spray some motorcycle chain lube into the square hole and cap it with duct tape. and that works just fine.

You have to get creative in terms of stock holding. I've made a few screw chucks from wood attached to the one face plate, and I also redid the spurs that came with the lathe, using drill rod.

Best,

Michael-San Francisco
