Dog power conversion help needed.

>I picked up this little WALKER TURNER treddle jig saw yesterday. just a day after getting a WALKER TURNER treddle lathe. any way the lathe treddle needs extensive work to get it back in shape. and acording to the people who sold me the jig saw said it had a bycle stand that went in the trask two days earlier some one would want to hook it upto a motor. so here I am with a jig saw in need of power and I can either build it so it sits on an excersise bike or build a tread mill and let the dog supply the power. so my question is is a 7 pound Italion Grey hound enough dog? When I go for a bike ride she can keep up for about an hour or so. I figured if I gear it down so she is at an easy trot there should be close to enough power what do you all think? I have a 14 pound dog but he is lazy. and I am not real fond of the exercise bike idea. I think a tread mill would be easy enough to build and there is no need for the dog to just lay there in a pile of sawdust all the time. It would make for some good bonding.

>I have seen several vintage treadmills designed for dogs /goats as well as a couple larger ones for horses.I was once set up at a steam show and the people next to me had an operational one where a Border collie ran a butter churn...Pretty neat!

Basicaly they have a floor made out of wooden slats on a web belt with the floor inclined up at the front and when turned a shaft turns at the top which turns a power pully.Kind of simple but I would think it would involve a lot of work to make one.

Fighting dogs are exercised on tread mills which probably could be adapted to run a pully. These have a canvas floor that turns.I have seen homemade ones as well as ones that you can buy.

There was another type of tread mills for dogs that looked sort of like a big Hamster wheel, these were used with a special type of small dog and used to turn cooking spits in the fireplace.Would be neat to have a dog on a treadmill that run a grinding wheel etc. and have to confess to thinking about it myself

Be aware if your dog looks anything at all like a pit dog and it gets out that you have a treadmill there is a good chance that you will get in trouble with the police if they find out with the very real possiabilty of your dog being taken as often this is all the proof needed that you are engaging in the sport of Dog Fighting. I know of a case just like this that happened even though there were no "proof" that the dog was fighting........Todd

>How big is your dog? I have bits and peices of one it is wood slats an squair link chains that drive a gear. it is on a slant that can be raised and lowered to increase the dogs speed. I need to cut mine down to about 1/3 original size for a jig saw.
