Phenix Saw Redux Again

Roy from Cincy

>Thanks to everyone who has helped me research this saw. Ernie Miller from Topeka asked if there was an etch on the blade. Sadly,if there ever was, it hasn't survived.

The handle on the saw is distinctive, so I've posted a pic in hopes that some of you saw experts might recognize it.

Thanks,

Roy

>I have seen a good many of these saws and as someone else alluded to I think they were a cheaper line of saws that Atkins put out. Simular to Disstons "Jackson" line of saws. The distinctive shaped handle is about identical to some other Atkins saws I have seen.In my experance Atkins saws have very weak etches that just don't hold up any where as well as a Disstons for some reason.

Personaly i believe that these Saw makers picked English sounding names like Atkins "Sheffield Saw works", and the Disston "Jackson" [like Spear and Jackson] to confuse un sophisticated buyers of thier cheaper saws into thinking they were getting a quality English saw.Maybe figured if they weren't satisfied with the quality of their new "English" saw they would decide to try an American saw like an Atkins or a Disston next time......just speculating on that now...Todd

>I agree with Todd. Now that you have pictured the entire handle, I can see that it is very characteristic of the Atkins line in terms of the overall shape of the hand-hole. That, along with the medallion, makes it look a "pretty sure" for Atkins/Sheffield.

Sharpen her up and get her working.
