File Maintance Question

>I recently purchased a few files and rasps and would like to maintain them. I use some for shaping wood and some for sharpening things such as scrapers and lawn tools. I regularly use a file card and keep my files separate in a pouch, but I'm worried about rust. I live in a humid area and rust prevention is a contineous battle. Does anyone have a recommendation?

I've thought about Boeshield T-9 or camilia oil, both of which I have. I doubt using this oil on sharpening files would matter, but I don't know about woodworking although I regularly use camilia oil on planes and chisels. I've also thought of using that paper Lie-Nielsen planes and saws come wrapped in. I can't remember the name of it, but LN sells it.

>Easyiest fix I`ve found is to warm them up alittle and then melt beeswax into them.Seems to help keep them from loading up,especially when filing things like aluminum.

>I get to use some pretty expensive files in the jewelry lab where I have a part time job. I was instructed that I should lift the file instead of pulling it back while on the metal. I was told that pulling back with pressure on the file will dull it quickly. It is hard to break the habit of pulling back after pushing.

>I was always taught never to oil a file as it can cause it to clog when used. I think if you keep your files in a closed wood cabinet or box when not being used you shouldn't have to worry much about rust esp. if you have them in a pouch,[making sure they don't touch each other].While I have never used it Have heard of others that used materials to remove moisture out of thier chests or box.....I live right on the water,[Chesapeake Bay] and the files i leave on my bench get a little brown but I never noticed any real affect on thier performance so don't worry to much about it....Todd

>Thanks for the responses. I may give the Dricote and paste wax a shot. I thought the T-9 and oil might cause a clogging problem.
