$5 Bench

Todd Hughes

>Went to my every wed. auction yesterday and one of the first things I saw was this Big Old bench. Was about 8 ft. long with a solid one peice top about 4 in. thick of what looked like maple to me.Top was excellent with no cracks or warping though lots of minor nicks.Tool tray was missing and bench was a bit wobbly. Had huge angled legs dovetailed into the top and the angled leg vice like you see on Benches out of Penn.Bench needed work but think you could put it right with out to much trouble. Never had an end vice,[did see one in another part of the auction though!]

Was big and heavy and I don't need something like this and wouldn't know how I could sell it or even where I could put it but the more I looked at it the more i thought I should get it.Thought maybe I could put it on the back porch.Told my friends Danielle and Joanne that if i got it I think the three of us could unload it into the house and they looked at me like I was crazy with both saying what do you need that for. They were right of course but I still risked standing there as it was sold trusting to my will power not to bid.The girls weren't so sure and stood there to watch over me.Auctioner gets to the bench and after a short try with out getting a bid for the minimal $5 throws in some wagon parts and a guy bids the $5.Auctionner looks at me and asks "Dead Horse ,[the name I bid under] do you want it?" Both girls grabbed my hands and held them down and shouted in unison NO! Was pretty funny and everybody had a good laugh as the bench was sold for the $5 bid......Oh well was probably best I didn't get it I guess but I did moan about it alot all during dinner Todd

Ouch...good story

>Maybe you should have given the girls some money for shoe shoping and attended the auction alone. Seems like I have had more than one plan foiled by the other gender. Loved the story.

>Hey Todd,

"Auctionner looks at me and asks "Dead Horse,[the name I bid under] do you want it?"

Weeelll...since you brought it up first.. and..well..uh..I am kinda curious. How did you come up with mrsdeadhorse? I mean...was mrdeadhorse already taken?

"Thought maybe I could put it on the back porch."

I've been thinking about an outdoor bench in the backyard under a nice shady tree for the summer. I'm still looking for some cheap thick planks to mount on a couple posts driven into the ground. Heck...for five bucks, I would of carried it home on my back and whistled dixie while skipping down the road.

>Were you planning on stacking them up? Last time I was there, you already had at least two hefty benches on your back porch. One that size just might fill it up. You might also want to do a structural analysis of the foundation before adding another, huge one.

>Gee Todd, sounds like it would of made for a heck of a dining room table eh? Coarse it might of taken up most of your kitchen area, but ahhhhhhhhh well, small sacrifice to have a great conversation piece. Might also could of been pressed into service as an extra sleeping area for wayward Yankees such as myself. No, come to think of it your sofa is probably the most comfortable one I've ever slept on. I love that sofa.

So, what your saying is that if we hold your arms down you can't speak? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm are you part Italian? ;~)

Deadhorse....you asked....

Todd Hughes

>I used to bread thouroughbred horses [we had 300 at one time on the farm once] and when it came time to put one down no one that worked for me would do it so I shot them ,[Horses not the people]. After a while I took to cutting thier heads off,[again horses not the people] and hung the skulls on the wall of my shop.Used to bet the new guys a 6 pack i could dehead a horse in less then 2 min. using just a knife. Never lost. When i got out of the horse feild and got into blacksmithing thought Dead Horse Forge had a good ring about it , better then dead cow eh? At the auction used a tax number that was for the blacksmith bussiness so used the name Dead Horse. When we got on Ebay my x wife thought it would be clever if she sold under the name Mrsdeadhorse ,[the name Dead horse was taken] and i would be the Mrdeadhorse. Kind of cute.. She got her name but then found out only one name to an email address so never was a Mrdeadhorse.

Have to admit I really like it as it is catchy and not easy to forget which is important I think. Get alot of emails thinking I am a woman though ........Todd
