Saw Hang, Follow up to Tuesday Chat

>I promised to post a couple images that will help explain the conecpt of "hang" with handsaws. This image is taken from a Disston manual and explains it pretty well.

Essentially you want your fingers and arm pointing to the middle of the blade. I am amazed at how many saws point your arm to the toe. When I buy a saw, the hang is one of the first things I check. Then I look to see if the blade is bent at the toothline.

The correct hang makes all the difference. You saw much faster and much straighter.

>I used one of my WW2 Disston's tonight and paid particular attention to the "hang" as I was sawing.

Then I used my older Disston, probably from the late teens and noticed a significant difference in sawing.

Also, I would like to publicly thank Chris Schwarz and Steve Shanesy for the chat Tuesday night. It was very informative to me and I had a lot of fun.

Thanks Guys, Mike Guenther in the muggy foothills of S. Carolina
