For father's day, make mine a plow plane

Roy from Cincy

>O.K. fellow neanders, swmbo says I can spend some cash on a father's day gift. I've been looking at plow planes. I'd like to get a wooden one, anteek-like, with a set of blades. I don't need one with ivory tips and other fancy stuff, but I would like for it to work. Having never used a really good plow plane, what features should I look for? What should I expect to pay? Any idea who has a good selection of user models? Not collectibles. I hope it will be better than that Chinese thing I got at Woodcraft for $35. You shure get what you pay for. Will I ever learn that?

>My LOML made a similar announcement. Now I'm trying to decide between several Veritas planes. They are the 4-1/2 smoother, Scraper and Low Angle Jack. Now all I gotta do is decide but I can't find my three sided coin.

>I got my woodie plow from Tony Murland for what I consider a reasonable price ($60 or $70, I don't recall). He shows up at all the big shows like the January one here in San Diego. Here's his site:

But like all of these, they only come with one blade. Sandy Moss is currently listing a set of plough blades for $75, and he is the one I got my set from. But my set had some of them with different tapers, so the wedge works better with some of them than with others:

No affiliations, other than as a happy customer.

>I've spent between $35 and $200 on plow planes on Ebay, depending on condition, # of blades, etc. For one with a single blade in usable condition, $50-75; for one with a full blade set (or if you buy blades seperately for $75 or so) $100-250. Now, add in ivory tips and other such and you're really having fun.

I've got 3 now of difference fence adjust designs: one with wood screws, one with wedges and one with a screw to tighten from the top.

>Pam,

I've seen the ECE plow plane. In fact, I have their scrub plane and it is the greatest. I'm just having a hard time getting past those aluminum posts. Blech!
