hand plane

>I recently acquired some old hand tools, which I know very little about. But one caught my interest and I'd like to know more about it. It's a hand plane that appears to be very old. It's about 7" long and all metal. Instead of the normal wooden ball at the back there is a handle grip like a hand saw. The only markings that I noticed were "made in USA". Instead of the blade sticking out a slot in the bottom it runs the full width of the bottom. On the side there is a small gadget that moves up and down in a grove, is flat on the bottom and is held in place with a thumbscrew. I assume this is some sort of depth adjustment. Does anyone know what this is used for or a web site with pictures of old planes? I'd like to find out more about it. See I told you I know very little about hand tools!

Thanks

>MY first guess would be a #78 rabbet plane, but it might be one of several others. There is an incredible variety in the design of hand planes. Does it look like this? (Click on the photo for more info)

Check here for an overwhelming amount of information on metalic, and some transitional, planes, made in the U.S.A, by Stanley. Note that there were many other manufacturers as well.
