Visit to Valhalla

Roy

>Well, fellow neanders, swmbo and swmbo junior drug me off on vacation across the South, eventually to end up in Daytona Beach. However, we HAD to go to Atlanta to see the Braves play, so swmbo junior could see Chipper Jones. This gave me a great idea! You know, Highland Hardware is in Atlanta, right? So I start lobbying for a side trip through Highland Hardware. Valhalla! Nirvaha!

O.K. so I'm granted an hour in between Stone Mountain and Turner Field. I sacrifice large numbers of coolness points for wanting to go to a hardware store while on vacation, however.

We find Highland Hardware. It's easy to get to. It's in a quaint downtown neighborhood. It's a quaint old building. I find a nice mortice chisel and take it to the front and, son of a gun, they've got my name in their data base, right there at the counter. The lady says "You're Roy from Cincinnati, right?"

But the best thing is that I found not one but two posters of His Royness of Underhill posted on the wall. One was autographed thusly: "To Highland Hardware. Thanks for supporting woodworking beyond the Norm."

Cool!

>I remember that quaint little neighborhood on Va-Highlands Ave. We used to do lunch at one of the local taverns,( I think it was George's Tavern where PBR was on tap.), on the same block while we were building their "new" store. This was over 20 years ago, though. I'm sure it's changed a lot since then. That's an historic neighborhood around there. Is that real estate office still on the end of the block? We also remodeled that building, too. That was a cast-iron bit*h because of the shape of the space. It was all fun though and I learned a lot about capentry and woodworking during that time.

>I love that store. I have only been a couple of times, the first in 1996 when I went to the Olympics in Atlanta, the second, when I was on business and made a side trip (from Chicago!)

The first time I had no idea that I was entering such a great place - verily, a woodworkers nirvana.

>Ed, if you want to set something off in a post, you should use something other than < and > for setting it apart. The problem is that the software thinks it is html and tries to render it. That is why your post above did not come out right. Use parenthesis or brackets instead. (I used codes to make the ones I posted show up)

I like Highland, too

>I'm about as far away from them as Chris is, but got treated like an old friend. When I was scouting around for a benchtop and asking nasty questions about flatness specifications and the like, Highland had someone there who answered them in detail. In fact, I was put in touch with the specific member of their staff who knew those details.

They handled the shipping perfectly too. A very fine outfit, from my experience. Wiley
