Got a Couple of Spiers Smoothers today *LINK*

Dan Clermont in Burnaby

>Awhile back ago I asked Tony Muralnd to keep an eye out for a Project Spier's for me and he came through. The price was less then a plane kit and it would still give a chance to play and fettle.

The plane needs to be cleaned up and it looks like someone replaced the blade and chipbreaker with a Hildick's Blade and Mathieson Chipbreaker. The balde/chipbreaker combo don't quite fit in the existing mortised slot so I will have to do a little bit of work to straighten that out. Also need to reshape the chipbreaker cause it is pretty beat up and doesn't make contact on the sides.

The plane also has a replaced tote which is not really optimal but functional and I plan on either replacing it or reshaping it someday and the front bun had been broken but repaired with a brass plate.

I also bought a second Spier's infill smoother which is in good shape and has a craftsman made closed tote. It is very comfy and I was going to resell it to a friend but it sounds like that may not happen. I'll probably hold onto it for awhile and stare at it until LOML reminds me I don't need two;)

>I would have to say that you got a couple of nice planes! You will have to post a picture of the shavings you take when you get #1 all kitted up!

If you ever need to find a home for #2 let me know!

I know you asked on the forum about brokerage fees... did you have to pay any????

>The second plane looks like it's ready to work right now, and the first looks like it's structurally tight. Have you thought about getting a thicker blade for the first plane so as to close the mouth up (maybe I'm not seeing it from the right angle)?

>Hi Brad,

I did not have to pay brokerage fees but got stung on the PST and GST. Pretty choked when it came COD. Actually, I refused the shipment at first until I talked to Revenue Canada and UPS.

I am very happy with both planes. The mouth is about 1/32" open on both planes and a piece of arborite shim had the Porject Spier's down to a couple thou and the D Handled Spier's would have needed the mouth opened a bit.

Let you know when I am ready to sell the second one.

>Hi Wiley,

The second Spier's is really nice and the mouth just seems to be under 1/32" cause with a laminate shim the mouth was too tight.

I am thinking abot maybe getting a thicker blade and chipbreaker for the Project Spier's someday. Any idea where to get one other then Ron Hock (Abosutely nothing against Ron Hock jsut wondering if their are any other alternaticves). I was thinkin gabout buying a1/4" thiick balde and back bevelling it 5 degrees bu thaven't done the math yet on how high the back bevel will ride up the blade and where the chipbreaker would sit. Just got them last night and played a llttle at work.
