chisel prototype-2

>This chisel was made like the first except it had a handle made from plum. A friend of mine at work cut down a decent sized plum tree from his front yard and let me take the lower part of the trunk. The wood was gnarly to dry and yielded no good project boards. There were some nice smaller chunks that turn very fine handles however. It is a very pretty wood with orange and purples and pink tones. It tends to darken with age so I do not know what it will look like in 10 or 100 years! This prototype chisel I gave to a woodworking friend for his 40th birthday.

Portland tools and planes

>Steve, Maybe someday Portland will be known as one of the great toolmaking areas of the world!!!

You do great work also and I love the Japanees style plane you made for me. (I used it on the walnut marking gauge) My little girl thinks it is pretty neat how you just have to give the body a light tap to adjust the iron. Works great.

>Beautiful! Did you at least get a chance to use either chisel before you gave them away? Do they work as good as they look?

The plum is a great/unique handle!

>Hi,

Truly beautiful chisels! I am in a process of making a couple of chisels myself. Now I know how they should look like.

How did you fasten the blade to the handle?

>The chisel cross section is 1/8 x 1/4". I heated up the tang portion and pushed it into a 1/4" diameter hole. The plum handled chisel has side bolsters made from brass that match the look of my marking knives. The cherry handled chisel does not have these. I think they add a bit of class and I like the consistant look. For both chisels I used epoxy to make sure everything stays in place. Good luck with your chisels and post pictures for us to enjoy.

Thanks,

Dave

>Beautiful chisel, Dave. I also wanted to comment that the 'double ferrule' arrangement is excellent engineering, and works very well on the marking knives you sent.

Dave, what are your plans

Tom Colligan, Peoria

>Dave, do you plan on offering chisels in addition to your marking knives and gauges? If so, when? Tia,
