chisel prototype-1

>I have needed a dovetail chisel for cleaning out the sockets of fine dovetails. The narrow chisels I have are too thick to easily work inside tight confines. I decided that since I make marking tools for laying out joinery I should try my hand at a detail chisel also. I made two prototypes (I gave them both away!) but here are some pictures of them. This one has a cherry handle. The blade is 1/4" wide and 1/8" thick where it goes into the ferrule. The thickness tapers down to a bit over 1/16" at the tip and has about a 25 degree bevel. The blade is short for close-in paring and good control. It is meant for light work and not for beating upon! The prototype was made from 0-1 tool steel hardened and tempered to about 60 Rc. 0-1 can take a very keen edge but may not hold it as long as some more exotic alloys. Now I have to make ME one. I will probable make myself a set of three 1/8 to 3/8 inch wide.

>The balde is machined from 0-1 tool steel. Besides being addicted to woodworking handtools I also have a secret passion for old machinery. I have a 3-axis milling machine (but don't tell anyone on this forum!)

>thanks Ralph. I had a stamp made for me. O-1 is pretty soft before you heat treat it and the stamp is about 62 Rc.

>Very Nice job Dave. You are inspiring me to introduce some new tools pretty soon. I won't copy the chisel idea though. At the end of next month I'll be introducing my brass and lignum vitae hammers for adjusting the wedges, irons, etc on wooden planes.

When you get into production of the chisels email me, I want to own at least one of your tools.

>Dave,

Thanks for the comments. I see you have been very busy making lots of nice knives! I look forward to seeing your plane iron hammer. I have one sketched up for "sometiime" but I have a lot going on right now. Maybe a trade? If nothing else us Dave's and we poor tool makers can support each other! Keep up the good work. Wish I could get to the other coast sometime and see Chester Toolworks. If you are ever in Portland, give me a ping.
