Disston Hand Saw Query

AD

>Hi all,

I found an old Disston D8 26" 8pt crosscut saw in v.good condition at a second hand shop yesterday for $40 Australian( about $27 US). I know that the D8 was a pretty common saw and there are lots of examples out there but I thought that they were made in the US. This particular saw was made in Canada.

I'm interested in finding out some more info on the saw if anyone here has any knowledge or knows a good web site.

TIA

Andrew

>The Disstonian Institute is one of the best online resources for reasearching Disston Saws.

The other great place is Pete Taran's VintageSaws.com site. Lots of information on saw care, too.

Handsaws are as addictive as planes. I came home with three superb Disston aristocrats on Sunday. Total cost, less than $12.

>I'm sure some folks can provide more information, but there is a lot of stuff on the web about Disston saws. You might try a search on disston or disston hand saws. I know there is a Disston Institute but do not know the email address.

By the way, I recently bought two Disston D-8's made around WWII. They were a matched pair of crosscut and rip. They were sharpened by Steve Cooke and perform beautifully. The price you stated of $27 seems to be a good price for a saw in good shape. You could compare with D-8s recently sold on ebay, but $27 is a low price for a good usable saw and you don't have the other hassles associated with buying on-line.

>I always hear about these great deals on handsaw's and planes but here in Canada there is a shortage of good used tools. For all the money spent on e-bay junk I'd jump at the chance to pick a good one up for $27US hell by time all was said and done the one in the benifit auction ended up costing me $67Cdn but it went towards a good cause.

>Disston had a plant in Canada specifically for making saws to be exported to places like England and Australia. Same quality as the Philly saws, and a bit more collectable here in the US

>Don't think I have ever seen a made in Canada Disston though imagine they would be common in Can. and other related countrys. I have bought a few made in Canada Stanley spoke shaves and in my experance they go for a good bit less then the made in the US ones when I sold them on Ebay. Don't know if it would be the same with Disstons

$27 for a saw found in the wild!Even in the old tool hell I live in I rarely see a saw priced over $5 or so unless something special.I did see a big,[28 in.] and old ,[1900] D7 the other week that still had some of the paper lables on the handle that was priced at $8. A friend bought it and sharpened and cleaned it up and turned out to be a really nice saw. After he showed it to me I thought I probably should have bought it but hey once you start paying $8 for saws where will you end up, eh?.......Todd

>Jim,

You might want to check with Steve Cooke at www.cookessharpening.com. His business is sharpening but he does sell some saws. I don't know if he would have what you're looking for, but I bought my D-8s from him, and my experience was positive.

>Hi. My name is jerry and I have a serious saw addiction. I keep buyin em to give em good homes and to keep them from being used as amateur painter's pallets. And I buy em just for somethin to do. And sometimes I spend way too much money for them. Speakin of which: I keep hearin about saws in the wild in some places going for outrageously low prices, and I thought I had stolen my D-8 rip saw with the "trigger finger" tote for just shy of $8.00. In Central Texas, old rust is relatively hard to find. The D-8 got me started down that slope and since I've bought a bunch. Even made a new tote for a 112 that was suffering from severe dehornitis. Learned to sharpen from Pete's site and the honey-dos are pilin up big time cause all I want to do is cut scrap with handsaws.
