Help me choose a plane

Gordy Caughey in Fountain Hills, AZ

>I recently finished a project for my friend's Italian Bistro. I only charged him for the materials since it's just my hobby. He insists that I pick out a new tool for my efforts. He suggested a LN hand plane..........UH, OK...I would like a LN smoothing plane. Since I am pretty much a beginner when it comes to planes, I thought I would solicit your opinion. My current planes are an old Stanly 78, a LN 20 degree bronze block plane (my favorite hand tool) a LN large shoulder plane (what a gem) a #6 Clifton fore plane, and a HNT Gordon palm smoother in ironwood (it cracked the first time I used it). I never decided on a smoother and thought the LN would be a sure bet but there are some choices I have to make. #4 or 4-1/2, high angle or standard. Bronze or iron (what is the advantage of bronze?) rosewood or cherry totes (matter of taste I guess), improved chip breaker. Have I forgotten anything? I work mainly hardwoods of all types both figured and not. I understand that the higher angle frog will perform better on highly figured hardwoods. Will it also work as well on non-figured or even soft woods? Thanks in advance for your opinions.

>My personal pref would be the 4, standard angle, with improved chip breaker. Buy the high angle frog later if you think you really need it.

Bronze is a bit heavier than the iron, but the iron 4 is already a pretty hefty plane.

Wood choice is purely aesthetic...

>Hi Gordy,

If you want the plane just for smoothing to do the final few passes I suggest you go for the 4.5 with improved chipreaker. The original LN chipbreakers are far inferior, thinner than an old Stanley chipbreaker. The 4.5 doesn't come in bronze Because it's heavy enough already. I started out with the 4.5 and was happy with my choice, but eventually got the 4 (iron) to do regular benchwork and shaping because I found the 4.5 a little too heavy for anything other than smoothing.

Low-angle smoother?

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>You might search back through the threads - there have been some lively conversations about low-angle (as in bevel-up) planes [like block planes] vs. high-angle (as in bevel-down) planes, with some proponents arguing pretty strongly for the bevel-up planes.

Myself, I'm a bottom feeder, so I've been just one of the lurkers on the subject.

THANKS!!!

>Thanks for all the great responses. I appreciate and highly regard your opinions. I think it will be the 4.5 then with the standard angle. Sounds like it comes with the improved chip breaker as standard now. I am curious about the adjustable mouth option. I will do a search for past messages.

Thanks,

Gordy

>Gordy,

The LN 4 1/2 does come with an adjustable mouth, via the frog adjustment. The frog, which holds the blade, can be moved to adjust the spacing between the blade and the front of the mouth.

The low angle planes made by LN include a smoother, a jack, and a jointer. The smoother and the jack come standard with an adjustable mouth. The sole of these planes in front of the mouth can slide to close or open the mouth, much like an adjustable mouth block plane.

Bob's comment about getting and ajustable mouth option refers to the low angle jointer plane. The mouth on this plane is not adjustable as normally offered by LN. I don't think this is the plane you are interested in if you want a smooth plane.

Ted

Re: THANKS!!!

>Thanks Ted,

So, the adjustable mouth option is really only applicable to planes which do not have room for an adjustable frog. That makes sense. I was wondering why an adjustable mouth (as in a block plane)would be desired if the frog is adjustable.

Thanks for clearing this up.

Gordy
