The rule joint

>I am finishing up a Pembroke table which was started a few years back. Work went quickly until I reached the rule joint. This special joint is used to dress up the appearance of table leaves--no daylight through the crack when in up position and classier looking when down. Well, this weekend was the time to do it and I found out why one NEEDS lots of planes. In this project I used:

#5 1/4, #93, #78, #45, and rounding work with H&Rs. The floor is full of shavings, but both joints are done. Thanks for viewing.

>Or, of course, a pair of rule joint planes.

Shaping wood by hand is really a kick, isn't it?

>Great work! Now if we can just see some shots of the whole table!!!!

I'm surprised the list of planes is so short but I guess the 45, and the hollows and rounds can add up to quite a few planes on their own!

What type of wood is that by the way??

>I have been looking for a set of table joint planes for doing the rule joint. They are not incredibly common and not very cheap when I do come across them. It looks like it would be a challenge but a fun joint to make.

I look forward to seeing photos of the table when complete.
