Building an Infill (the Tote) *LINK*

>After the second iron body was finished. I began to build the wooden infill. Here is the story:

http://www.hobel-und-eisen.de/griffherstellung.htm

The second plane has an angle of 50 ( the first is 47). The difference seems to be small, but using the plane the difference is quit noticeable. The plane needs more power to be pushed, but whats more important ( and the intention to buils this second one) it can deal better with difficult grain direction.

Some questions

Wiley Horne--Glendora CA

>Hi Rolf,

Congratulations on your new machined-from-solid infill! Now is this the fourth one you've made--a 47-degree and 50-degree of this style, plus the bevel up 'block plane', plus the Japanese-bladed plane. That's four, right?

Could you tell us some of your observations so far: How do the planes compare? Have you made side-by-side planing comparisons on the same board?

This is really a remarkable achievement, and I'd love to hear more about the details you consider important.

>Hi Wiley,

I will make some test the next days and post the results.

I have now finished five S53 Blades and have one attached to the large block plane. they are hardened to 64 HRC and 6mm thick. They sound like a japanese blade, they perform very good, but the price is that they are a little difficult to sharpen. I will be interesting to see who long the edge lastes.

>Hi Rolf,

Very interesting. I know what you mean about the S53 blades being tough to sharpen. By the way, are these Holtey's, or did you figure out what S53 actually is? Anyway, life's too short to use anything but diamond on them. In my opinion.
