>I just got a Stanley #15 Excelsior block plane with a "ball tailpiece" (which has the turned ring on the base of the ball.)
Could the ball be original to this plane or was it added later?

>According to Patrick Leach's site, the 15 did not come with the knob. The 9 3/4 did. It may be the knob was swapped out by a previous owner, or you may have a 9 3/4. Is it marked? The 12 is 7" long, the 9 3/4 is 6. The 9 3/4 with the knob is also very collectable.

>If you read a little further, you can find that the #15 1/2 did come with the same knob as the #9 3/4.
Perhaps you really have a #15 1/2?
Just some idle speculation...
