Price Guides

>Hi everyone. Does anyone have suggestions about good price guides to old tools? I notice there are several around, e.g., by Herbert Kean and Robert Barlow, but have no idea if they are worth while. I am not a collector and am mainly interested in buying tools for use. I have some experience watching prices on ebay. Would a guide even be useful? Thanks, Sanford

>The Walters guide is the best one for Stanley tool. It' out of print, but a new one is due out soon.

It's called Antique & Collectible Stanley Tools Guide to Identity & Value by John Walters.

I had his website somewhere but can't find it right now.

>Never did see any use for price guide, its all about what the seller wants and what your willing to pay. One can do search on the bay and see what current prices are. Flea market, garage sales will find a big range of what the dealer "thinks" it is worth. If your into collector quailty and looking at investment purchase, then your on your own.

>If you're ever in the Marietta, OH area, visit John's shop. You will have a hard time believing how many planes can be stuffed into one small store, while the saws, measuring tools, bit braces and other hand tools will add to the distance your eyes bug out.

Marietta is right on the Ohio River, directly across from Williamstown, WV, and not far south of Columbus--not my favorite city. IIRC, you're looking at about 2-1/2 hours mostly on Interstates, as there is a Marietta exit.

If old Victorian buildings yank another of your chains, Marietta is also a great place to vist.
