Whatsit??

Derek Cohen (in Perth, Australia)

>I'm trying to work out what to do with this. It came bundled with a Stanley #59 dowelling jig I purchased several months ago, so I suspect that it may be used as a depth gauge for auger bits.

So esteemed brethren of the handtool, please educate me in the mysteries of the Whatsit.

Kind regards from Perth

Derek

>Its a Stanley No. 49, nickel plated cast iron version, Adjustable bit gauge, clamp to an auger type bit to control depth, like most auger attachments were not of much practical use..............gtools

>I just received one of these attached to this brace and auger bit. Perhaps someone can let me know why they think that it is of little practical use. I don't have any trouble using blue tape or masking tape as a depth gauge, but since the #49 came with the brace, I'm thinking that I would like to try it out.

Another driveby! :)

Re: Another driveby! :) bait....

gtools

>just throwing out bait for a friendly discussion, seems to be getting some bites.....

--just because it was made by Stanley doesnt mean it was a great tool. Old tools that are in such great condition usually mean they were little used. The Stanley #49 is large and clunky, a pain to put on and change to another bit, it will slip on the bit when you bottom it out. Tape wins out on this one........tks, gtools.......

Sorry but.......

Jonathan Peck - N.Y.

>Sorry but....the description was dead on. Perfect wrist and cup handles with no signs that anyone has ever tried to gorilla a dull auger bit into submission...beep...beep!!

Patented in 1859 this is one of the earlier of the patented braces that could hold any square tapered bit. It was so successful that when Stanley wanted to get into the brace market they bought Fray out in 1909. This beautiful brace is made and stamped JOHN S. FRAY and No. 112 for a 12 inch swing. It has swirley grained cocobolo wood for the head and rosewood for the handle which is held on with two pewter rings. The wood is in excellent condition with no chips or checks. The metal has a dark patina with no traces or rust or pitting and is very smooth. The head is very tight with no slop and spins freely. Original large wingnut is crisp with no buggering. Over 100 years old yet in prime condition. With this brace is a dia. auger bit with a Stanley adjustable depth gauge in fine condition with full nickel plating intact. On inside of depth stop is cast in, MADE IN USA, PAT. OCT,11, 94.

Did I mention...... *LINK*

>.....that there are no signs that this brace has ever seen the inside of a toolbox? Uh...oh well yeah...forgot the driveby.

Fray & Pigg with unusually large pewter rings that I liberated from Sandy's brace Kollection. Possibly a prototype and a one of a kind...at least I've never heard of another like it.

>Greeting Spoffordaholics,

Please don't let that happen again Scott (i.e. being out-bid by a Gnu Yawkah). We gotta get more Fray/Spoffords on the left coast to balance out the east/west oldtool mass distribution. Heck, Gnu Yawk is about ready to sink into the Atlantic from Jonathan's collection alone.

Cheers,

Mike - who only has one measley Fray/Spofford bit brace and one Stanley Whimble brace with a Spofford chuck. You got one of them yet Jonathan? :-P

Sorry all.....

Jonathan Peck - N.Y.

>...my names Jonathan and I've got a brace problem...but especially a weakness for Spofford style braces. Perhaps when I get rehabilitated I might let a few escape my evil clutches...whoooohehehahahhehehehaha. No whimbles, but I did snag a nice John S. Fray & Co. corner brace double marked Fray and Stanley. It's good to see some brace heads out there.
