Finished another project.

Ed Snow

>This is a sen no-o dana and its box, a knock down table for japanese tea ceremony. The table is tiny only 19" tall and about 14" square. Nifty mortice and tenon joinery and interlocking mortice and tenons, solid panels with inlet edgebands by mitering them back into the panels. I tried to keep it as hand tool oriented as I could so I made good use of my japanese planes, chisels, and saw.

Unfortunately, I could not get urushi to finish it with so I used ruby kusmi shellac, and as I could not get any paulownia I used a nice piece of african mahagony.

I posted the marquetry on the box the other day, The box itself is air dried old growth vertical grain doug fir, the joinery is full blind dovetails.

>Wow, a tour-de-force of understated complexity. Very Japanese.

Was this your first time making full-blind dovetails?

Very nice Ed

>I'm totally daft on Japanese finishing. Could you elaborate on it? Or maybe point out a web page about it? I would appreciate any info.

Keep up the good work!

>Traditionally japanese use laqcuer on their work, the laqcuer is urushi and is somewhat complex. I would compare it to instrument makers making their varnishes. The problem is it has a shelf life and it is a contact toxin like poison oak. The urushi is brushed on with a human hair brush another unobtainable.

Thanks for your reply!

Urushi *LINK*

Gary in Vancouver, BC

>Urushi is truly beautiful, but can be difficult to work with. Need a dedicated room with proper humidity and temperature. I have been interested to obain some, however have not been able to find it outside of Japan. If anyone knows a supplier or has used Urushi, I would be interested to hear from you.

What Pam said...

David Barnett - Venice, FL

>I'd strongly suggest you contact the people at that link (Hiraide-Minowa America). I'm not exaggerating when I say that Harrelson Stanley (Hiraide America) knows more about urushi from first-hand experience than just about anyone in North America. Two summers ago Harrelson generously spent nearly two hours explaining urushi's unique demands and properties to me. Although up until now I've elected not to pursue urushi as a jewelry technique due to possible dangers of sensitivity to urushiol (I have many acute allergies these days), I am truly grateful for his guidance and willingness to share his amazing knowledge.

>Wow ...

With knockdown full blinds ... and interlocked M&T ... could we trouble you to post a series of closeups of the joinery, disassembled (or partially so, or whatever conveys its construction best)?

I very much liked the cross grain inlay, and would love to see the joinery.

When is (was?) the CoR end-of-year student show? Any source for photos of it? Do you have any interest in a second year?

That's all the questions i have for now ...

Thanks,

Clay

>The full blinds do not knock down, they are what hold the box together.

The show starts this friday and runs through the weekend at the Highlight Gallery in Mendocino.

I did not consider a second year, I am ready to get back to Iowa State and go back to multiple medias. I miss drawing studio, I miss thousands and thousands of students.

D'oh ...

>Right - not KD box ...

But the table is the M&T work ... if you have any pics of it 'apart'?
