Painted Panther Saw

What I'm talking about:

On the last page of the June 2004 Popular Woodworking is a story of a Painted Panther Head saw. Seems somebody painted a rural scene on this saw, and also painted the nuts. Apparently there is only a very few known examples of this saw, so rare in fact that rough ones go for about $500 or more and nicer ones go for $4-5000! The owner says he'll leave it as is. Question is, what would you do? I'd clean it myself I think.

I'm not a big fan of saw painters, but will give them a break, for if nothing else they are at least preseving the saws that they paint for future generations. I'd rather see them painted than rotting away in some dank, dark, dusty, forgotten shed. Now if the saw is damaged to the point that it is only good to break up for scrapers than by all means paint it up and make a nice decoration out of it. I'd perfer to see a woodworking scene on it, but that's me.

What thinks ya'all?

Not always - IIRC a guy on the Porch bought a painted saw, intending to remove the paint and retrieve the saw. Sadly, when he removed the paint, he discovered that the saw had been slightly rusty when the saw painter bought it, and the saw painter had removed the rust with a hand held grinder :-(

Well....

>I suppose I would rather see a saw like this get painted than a bunch of trees cut down to be painted on. One could recreate this saw, using today's steel and some apple or walnut. It takes a lot longer to grow a respectable sized tree. I guess I'm not as attached to older tools as some people. For me it is more about wood and the process.

Getting of my soapbox,

>The number of original Panther Head saws are finite and no more will ever get made. Trees are common,[the woods around my house are loaded with them!] and of course it is an easy, if rather slow process to make new ones, matter of fact think most do it by themselves, somthing that while sometimes I might think is happening when I see all the saws out in my shop, I don't think saws can do........I'd clean the painting off that saw right quick but wouldn't use it to harm any wood.....Todd

>Glad to see you weren't mislead by the article's persuasion to let the paint stay!

I guess it makes the few other Panther saws known to exist all the more valuable!!!!!

PS - I just got an idea for another drawer pull for Ernie! If this doesn't scream abused tool then I don't know what does!

Anyone remember that post from Badger Pond where the guy took an old framed painting (some rural scene as I recall) and painted the image of a panel saw right in the middle of the picture? Hee hee hee. I've been meaning to steal that idea for quite a while now. I wish I could remember who did that. That was one of my favorite posts from BP.

Not too long ago I used the link here on WC to try to order the Badger Pond Archive CD. I never heard anything back so I guess it's not being offered any longer.
