cutting veneer circles

Rob in Kansas

>I'm working on a frame where I want to inlay a series of circles from 1/4" to 1/2". I can take a 1/2" ID copper pipe and sharpen one end to punch out an accurate circle in my veneer. However the local Lowes tells me they don't have any pipe I can use to do the 1/4" and 3/8" circles. Anybody ever tried to do anything similar? What else could I use?

Thanks

Rob

>You can get plug cutters that would chuck into a post drill and cut 1/4" or 3/8" plugs. Would not work well for veneer though; perhaps you could get the same species as your veneer in a thicker board. Another option would be to take some steel stock, drill the right size hole in the center, then turn it on a lathe to a nice pointy end. Option three, take a wooden dowel, set the end on the veneer, and cut around it with a knife.

>An auto parts store carries pipe in those sizes. Fuel line or brake lines. You can get a short section of brake line pretty cheap.---Jack

>Those punches look like the easiest solution. If you only need a few circles and you have carving gouges, a 9 sweep (Swiss) is half a circle. Just twirl the gouge on the stock. It's self-jigging.

>Thanks guys,

I knew that carving chisles would work, but I don't have any yet. I think the hollow punches look like they would be the quickest, easiest way to make my circles. I'll see if the local HF has any in stock. If not I'll go to the auto store.

>In case you have trouble finding them at the Auto places they are also known as Gasket Punches.
