The Big Ship has returned

Jonathan Peck - N.Y.

>The QE II (Super luxery cookie tosser for crossing the pond in style Jeff ) returned last night, this time with little fanfare. This morning when I woke up it was double parked outside my window. Also got a big boat jointa' delivered to my doorstop. I'm a little dissapointed as there isn't any rust to clean or a single thing wrong with it to fix. Could someone please take this POS off my hands?? What am I to do with a Stanley type 11 8C in mint condition???

Zapped!!! *LINK*

Jonathan Peck

>I got the big boat down the shop. The patient was looking a little pale and grey and didn't want to come out and play. He was acting quite shy. Seems this bad boy has a deep dark secret he doesn't want the other boys to know. After a little TLC and prodding the big bad boy cried out "I've been zapped!!!!

Hmmm....he couldn't of been in that bad of shape cause there's really no pitting to speak of. The japanning is also pretty much all there. I had a rust barrel #6 that was covered in rust and cleaned up quite nicely by conventional means. It took me about 8 hours and the result was a nice user with no pitting and full japanning. It came out a little too shiny, but I couldn't save the patina. This was the first plane that I restored, and I would guess that I could get the same result in about half the time now and save the patina. I've never seen a zapped plane before.....YUCK!!!

This is getting weird *LINK*

Jonathan Peck

>Something weird is going on. I was able to clean the grey/black residue off. Now I'm thinking that at some point the plane was spray painted black and then the black paint was removed. Am I going crazy????

Grey/black residue?

Todd O. Cronkhite Native of Maine

>Jonathan,

What grey/black residue are you talking about? Are you saying this residue is a result of zapping? I zap planes (and other tools) all the time and I don't pick up on any residue as a result of it. Perhaps there is something I'm not aware of and they are in fact swamped in residue and I just don't know it.

I will say that at this point residue or not when I finish zapping and waxing a plane/tool it is once again in working order which is a far far cry from what it was before I zapped it.

Residue enlightenment please.

Re: Grey/black residue? *LINK*

Jonathan Peck

>Hi Todd,

I think that I was mistaken about the residue being a result of zapping, and I removed it quite easily with some acetone. I think it was the remains of black (spray?) paint, but I don't really know for sure. There was black paint on the frog where the blade beds.

Although, I have read some reports of a mysterious black haze on tools after zapping, I don't think that this was the case with my plane. If I remember correctly, some zappers got residue and some didn't. There wasn't any real conclusion to the discussiong due to the amount of variables involved between the individual zappers.
