Tool box design failure

Alan Bierbaum

>A while back I posted pictures of my new shop, wall mounted, tool box in process. After getting the doors on the upper section, I found out that my neat idea of split doors and inner doors was not very workable. Access to the items behind the doors was too restrictive to be useful.

I broke down and made two new doors, full size, to hold the tools. It works as designed.

Below are open and closed views. Now I can start on the 3 drawers to go below the doors and the plane rack to fit the bottom section. Maybe this design error will help someone else avoid the same problems.

>Thanks for posting your experience - so often, the mistakes don't get mentioned, and you're right - if someone else can learn from them, you've provide as good a service as talking about your successes.

A physicist friend of mine used to say that, if the experiment was designed right, it couldn't fail: either you'd confirm your hypothesis or you'd refute it. Nice attitude.

Don't feel too bad Alan...

>I have to start mine over from scratch. Mine is way to heavy to hang on the french cleat I used. I had so much packed in the outside doors they would have tore off the hinges. I guessed to much on it and was not happy with some of inner pannels too. I'll have to post pics of my cherry and walnut falure. I'll be desinging the next one with plans and tool weight taken in consideration, and not shooting from the hip:(.
