>I'm getting ready to paint the balusters on my porch rails, and wondering if they're dry enough. When I bought the wood in December, it was so wet that the act of cutting it on the bandsaw (sorry) drove water out ahead of the cut. I've had it up in the attic drying (good ventilation, gets up to about 90 degrees on hot days), but still...

Anyone have any experience with the $35 moisture meter Woodcraft sells, or any other suggestions of low-cost methods of checking? I'm not quite up to the $150 that the obviiously good brands run.

>IF you happen to have an accurate scale is the oven test method. Weigh a sample, toast it in the oven to completely dry and you can calculate the moisture content the piece had. www.woodweb.com can give you details.
