Take the rain with the sun - OT

Rob in Kansas

>Well my day started pretty good, last night I got a new little Badger hound to keep Stretch company. She is a cute little thing! But don't all new parents say that? :)

I still need to come up with a good name...any suggestions? I had a friend suggest "Madel" which she said translates to girl. The only other German name I can remember is "Hexa" which is good witch.

Anyway I was to have my Jeep worked on today so I left it at the mechanic's last night & borrowed a vehicle. After they opened this morning I got a call that during the night a dozen cars were broken into (including mine) and one was stolen. I didn't loose anything major, just my small box of cheap mechanic tools, my new receiver/ball to my hitch, & a no name 220 style block plane.

The worst part is all the broken glass all over my seats. Anybody know if safety glass slivers like normal glass & will a strong vacuum get it where I don't have to worry about my dogs? I can replace the stuff, I just don't want to spend the next couple years picking glass out of my "kids". Or me for that matter.

Thanks

If I recall correctly

Bill Houghton, Sebastopol, CA

>there are two common types of automotive safety glass: tempered and laminated.

Tempered glass, now I think the commonest type for side windows, shatters rather explosively into little glass kernels kind of like large Grape Nuts (less nutritious, though), without particularly sharp edges.

Laminated glass has a layer of plastic between two sheets of glass and tends to stay intact, though if a glass sliver does get loose, it can be pretty sharp. This used to be (still is? any auto body people in the room here?) the common glass for windshields.

I would think the mechanic would take some responsbility for cleaning it up, though - assuming it happened on their property.

Bill is right on the money with his response. People almost always break the door window that has tempered glass to get inside the car. The broken glass goes not leave behind slivers that non tempered does and is easly vacuumed up.

>Thanks Bill & John,

For the most part it was in grape nut size pieces. I did see a few small slivers and did my best to vacuum it up. But I was afraid there might be more in there.

As for the mechanic fixing it, it would be nice. There are a couple things. He said to bring it over in the morning, but with a new puppy & all I decided it would be easier to drop it off the night before. Also this guy has twice spent time working on what I perceived as a problem (which wasn't) and didn't charge me anything for his time. So I view it kind of like not turning in a $100 claim to insurance. I may get my $100 now, but they'll take far more later in increased premiums.

BTW I got another suggestion for a name...Agro. The largest croc on the Crocodile Hunter. And she is not quite 4 pounds! I'll keep thinking though. :)

Re the broken glass. Take a good hard look for chunks between the seat cushions, and under the seat. One day you will be looking for loose change, and will get a good scratching. DAMHIKT.

>Thanks Don, now Lili is in the finals too! My 2 1/2 YO niece decided that it should be Scrunchy to go with Stretchy. I can see it now, I'm outside yelling `Here Scrunchy.' Kind of like the 6-3, 350lb lineman saying Who's your daddy? to the little toy poodle! :)

As for the glass the only thing I didn't do was unbolt the front seats. I might find more later, but I made sure the seats were clean.
