Square edges on Chisels

Gerry Mayberry

>I would appreciate some advice on grinding chisels on a Tormek. I have trued the stone surface with the diamond jig provided,ie, til it is 90 degrees to the side of the stone, and checked the holding jig, etc. I keep winding up with a slightly skewed chisel and eventually wind up trueing it on a diamond stone. Skewing the chisel in the jig seems to help but so far has not completely solved the problem. Others I spoke with are having similar problems. I have tried modifying the amount of pressure, the amount of travel back and forth across the stone, etc.

>Be careful when tightening down the the blade in the jig that you turn the knurled thumbscrews on either side to even pressure. You can check with an inside caliper (not my first choice) or by starting to grind your bevel. Check the bevel for square with a small square (no pun intended) and tighten down the thumbscrew corresponding with the longer side of your blade. Repeat as many times as is necessary. Hope this helps

>Are the sides of your chisels square to the end? Some chisels have a slight taper to them (from the cutting edge to the handle) that can throw them off perpendicular when set against a jig like one used in the Tormek.

>After you've tried all those good ideas....

...check your jig. Our jig wasn't square. We had to file the back edge so tools would sit square in it.

>Try marking the chisel surface with a black marker (Sharpie works great). Rotate the Tormek wheel by hand and lightly move the chisel across the wheel,,,,the black area will show very quickly if the chisel/wheel are out of square.

This should be done at each tools set up,,,it save a lot of trial and error frustration with the jigs and tool allignment (or is it mis-allignment?).

>Gerry,

have you checked that the tool rest is parallel to the stone. If you have a newer Tormek, if has the ability to micro adjust the tool holder apparently, tho' I haven't seen one in the flesh. If not, just "manually adjust" to square by pulling/pushing the rest so it is parallel, then lock down the nuts

>On using the black marker...I am trying to get my head around this. If I follow it correctly, it will only work if the chisel is already square? It would not work for initial prep?

>...also, check that the stone is properly dressed. If you've used a homemade diamond jig to dress, things can get out of square (DAMHIKT).

FYI - the Tormek dressing tool is much more effective than the homemade version (DAMHIKT again)

>Thanks to all who responded. I will check out your good suggestions. I did use the Tormek diamond dresser to surface the stone after grinding some lathe chisels.
