To clean or not to clean?

Ernie Miller Topeka

>I just picked up a fancy 4 3/4" plumb bob at a garage sale and have no use for it so I will put it on ebay but the question is when I sell planes I will lightly clean them up to make them look good they are mostly users. but this is a collectors thing and it has some greenis white tarnish on one side from sitting in a tool box. so should I use some steel wool or brasso or somthing like that to clean it up first or leave it for the buyer? I don't want to ruin some thing of value.

>If the Patina has got so that it has turned parts white or real dark i would lightly clean it up some, only enough so that it looks clean but doesn't look like it has been cleaned. Brass Plumb Bob collectors often it seems like to polish thier 'bobs up a good bit but I never polish them figuring it is better to leave them with a Patina and the buyer can polish them if he so desires or leave them as is. But I think one that looks like it is very dirty or has paint on it can get hurt price wise too.....Todd
