Ebay Scam....

Todd Hughes

>I know lots of folks here buy stuff on the Ebay and thought I would share this... The other night I sold a pair of Binoculars for a bit under $2,000 , few days later I get an email from the fellow that was an underbidder asking me if I had emailed him asking if he wanted the item because the high bidder couldn't pay? I hadn't emailed him but what happened was that sombody else pretending to me did! of course what this guy was hoping was that the underbidder would fall for it and send him the money.I told the underbidder to play along so that we could get the guys name and address and he did and now he plans to turn it over the the police and ebay. Address is in the US but the email sounded like the fellow might be a forigner. Don't know what will come out of it but thought it was a good thing to warn others what can happen and that there are crooks out there waiting to skin you....I guess that I should be surprised that more of this doesn't happen......Todd

>Thanks for the heads up Todd. Just amazes me the idea folks will come up with and think that they'll never get caught. Prisons are full to the point of over-crowding of them folks which should tell others that they aren't any smarter than a whole bunch of other folks who thought that they where.

>Ebay now has a "Second chance offer" routine that is to handle this very kind of offer from the legitimate seller. Of course I suppose a very creative thief could figure a way to simulate that also.

$2000 for binoculars, who's skinning who :-). I know, they got competitively bid that high, nice sale.

Could be a US resident using an compromised off-shore mail forwarder for secrecy.

>Wow! That is a new one. I get:

Dear User:

Unfortunately, access to this particular category or item has been blocked due to legal restrictions in your home country. Based on our discussions with concerned government agencies and eBay community members, we have taken these steps to reduce the chance of inappropriate items being displayed. Regrettably, in some cases this policy may prevent users from accessing items that do not violate the law. At this time, we are working on less restrictive alternatives. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience this may cause you, and we hope you may find other items of interest on eBay.

Thank You.

It is Canada! Not that much stuff restricted here, and steadily getting less.

>They're some Nazi U-boat binoculars. I thought for sure you must be in Germany, where it might make sense for this type of stuff to be illegal, but not in Canada. Pretty odd!

Pretty amazing.....

>but I guess your country feels it has to protect it's people from being able to look at photos of WW II Binoculars that don't even have any German markings on them.I think in the 1940's Germans could probably still look at pictures of Canadian binocs, somthing to think about, eh? ...Todd

>Well, it is not the government that has decided we can't see it, it is eBay. They have probably put a blanket stop to all and anything that could be Nazi memorabilia, so has blocked out entire categories.

However, I have never heard of Nazi memorabilia being illegal in Canada anyway. We have some very strict laws concerning the importation of certain "hate" items (but not possession, although distribution is sometimes covered).

I really don't see why it (the category, not just the item) would be blocked. I think eBay is being overzealous, I suspect the just blocked a whole lot of countries without inspection of each one.

Would not necessarily work though...

>This kind of scam only works when payment is made in an unrecoverable fashion such as check or money order instead of credit card or Paypal, right?

The lesson for me has always been to pay with a credit card or Paypal since both have ways of reversing the payment. Never use Western Union with someone you do not know!

This probably happens so often though that I doubt eBay policing goes very far. My guess is they send a hand slap email and move on...

Footnote on terminology

Wiley Horne--Glendora CA

>Todd Hughes had it right in labelling these as "German" military binoculars. As I understand it, the term Nazi refers only to Nazi party members who took over control of the country for 10 or 12 years (70 years ago) in the aftermath of WWI and the great depression. Most Germans were not Nazis. I only mention this because we have a number of German members of this forum, and we owe it to them not to equate German with Nazi.

Please forgive the pedantry.

>Very bizarre. I still can't see it; AFAIK, Rogers hasn't moved to China *yet*. I have had the problem on occasion of specifying things available to me and got all canadian and german items. Placed a message to ebay and they said there was nothing wrong.

Anyway, some kind of weird glitch. As said, Canada is pretty liberal about these things.

Back on topic, I got one of those fraudulent offers a bit back. I get so much scam stuff I don't even report it anymore...
